Interpreting Words of Faith in Music & Dance - Week 4

A Four-Week Video Lecture Series by Stephen Crosby
All four lectures held in the Chapel

Week 4 - The Trials, Faith and Hopes of Black Slaves in the Spirituals Tradition as interpreted by Choreographer Alvin Ailey.

Experience a different musical interpretation of words of faith each week in addition to a
choreographer’s further interpretation in dance. Texts include passages from the Old and New Testaments, spirituals, and contemporary Christian songs. Music ranges from compositions of the 18th century to the present day and originates from Germany, France, Estonia and the United States. Choreographers are from Germany, Russia, Czech Republic and the United States. Each week, a composer and choreographer will be introduced, and the text that inspired the music and the choreography will be read and discussed together. A video of the performance will be viewed, culminating in a group discussion of reactions and insights. This is a unique opportunity to explore how the arts, specifically music and dance, provide additional layers of meaning and emotional impact in understanding and illuminating the words of faith.
